The Tournament Format

The in-season tournament is divided into two stages: group play and the knockout round. The basic concept of this tournament is that all 30 teams participate. They are divided into five teams within their conference, creating a total of six groups based on the victories and defeats of the previous season (2022–23). Based on this, each team played four games: two at home and two away.

Out of the four games played, only the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, and Milwaukee Bucks managed to maintain a perfect record with zero losses. The Pacers, Celtics, Kings, Bucks, Knicks, Pelicans, Lakers, and Suns are the eight teams that showed exceptional performance, earning them spots in the knockout stage. The knockout round featured a single-elimination format. In the quarterfinals, the Bucks, Pacers, Pelicans, and Lakers advanced to the semi-final match. In the championship, the Lakers and Pacers faced off, and the LA Lakers successfully secured the NBA In-Season Tournament trophy.

Semi-Final Recap

The first match took place between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Indiana Pacers, and the game ended with a victory for the Pacers with a score of 128-119. On game day, both teams showcased their offensive prowess. Tyrese Haliburton led the Pacers with 27 points, 15 assists, and 7 rebounds. Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo dominated the Bucks, leading the team with 42 points and 12 rebounds. Unfortunately, Giannis’s impressive performance wasn’t enough to secure a win for the team. The third quarter gave the Bucks hope of winning the semi-final, but the tables turned in the fourth quarter when the Pacers outscored the Bucks by. This was a major setback for the Bucks, who had high aspirations of reaching the finals.

The second semifinal match was between the Lakers and the Pelicans, and the Lakers won with a score of 133-89. For the Lakers, LeBron James led the team with 30 points in just 23 minutes of playing time. Additionally, the Lakers’ defense held the Pelicans to 38% shooting from the field. Anthony Davis scored 28 points for the Pelicans, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the LA Lakers from advancing to the finals. With two wins in the series, the LA Lakers are now one step closer to winning the NBA Finals.

After several struggles, the Pacers and Lakers entered the first inaugural in-season tournament finals, and the game was held on December 9, 2023, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The starting lineup for the Lakers was D’Angelo Russell, Cam Reddish, Taurean Prince, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis., and the starting lineup for the Pacers was Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, Bruce Brown, Obi Toppin, and Myles Turner.

Game Summary

LeBron James was prepared to lead the Lakers, while for the Pacers, it was Tyrese Haliburton. In the first quarter, Buddy Hield made a 3-pointer for the Pacers, assisted by Tyrese Haliburton. LeBron James led the Lakers with 10 points, while Myles Turner contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds to keep the Pacers in the game. In the second quarter, the Lakers maintained their lead at 33-25. Anthony Davis dominated the paint, scoring 12 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Tyrese Haliburton kept the Pacers within striking distance by contributing 8 points and 6 assists. At halftime, the Lakers led 62-52.

The Pacers came out with renewed energy in the third quarter, cutting the Lakers’ lead to 7 points. Buddy Hield caught fire from the three-point range, scoring 11 points in the quarter. The Lakers maintained control of the game in the fourth quarter, never allowing the Pacers to get closer than 7 points. The Lakers ultimately secured a 123-109 victory, winning the first-ever NBA In-Season Tournament.

As part of the post-game awards, LeBron James received the first-ever In-Season Tournament MVP award. Over the seven games of the tournament, he averaged 26.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 7.6 assists. Overall, the Lakers became the first team in the history of the tournament to win a championship. The game quickly became one of the most celebrated moments in NBA history.
