The modern badminton originated in British India from the earlier versions of battledore and shuttlecock. In 1899, the first badminton tournament called the All England Open Badminton Championship was organized by the Badminton Association of England. The International Badminton Federation is the professional sanctioning body of badminton which is now known by the name Badminton World Federation. It was found in 1934 with a membership of nine nations and has now expanded to 176 member nations. The BWF is responsible for organizing most of the international badminton tournaments.

Since 1977, the BWF World Championship has crowned the winners of the event as World Champions, awarding them with gold medals. The World Men’s Team Championship also called as the Thomas Cup conducts the international level competition between the representatives of various nations. Similarly, the Uber Cup or the World Team Championship for Women is for the women’s national badminton team. The Sudirman Cup, World Junior Championship and the Para-Badminton World Championships are also governed by the BWF.
