How does the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League tiebreak work?

When teams in the same group are tied, we employ a set of tiebreaking criteria designed to be fair and impartial. These criteria include points obtained in matches played among the tied teams, goal difference, and the highest number of goals scored. If needed, the same criteria are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the tied teams. If we fail to reach a clear decision, tiebreakers such as superior goal difference or the highest number of goals scored will be used. A team will obtain the highest number of away goals in all group matches. In the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League, teams will be ranked based on their disciplinary records in group matches. The accumulation of yellow and red cards will influence the number of points a team earns. Teams with fewer disciplinary points will secure higher rankings. Tied teams’ points and goals scored in matches will determine the tiebreakers. If ties persist, the tiebreaking procedure will continue for the remaining tied teams.

Are there any restrictions?

Armenia and Azerbaijan should be kept separate for political reasons. Regarding Kazakhstan’s grouping with England, Iceland, Ireland, or Wales, travel restrictions, such as visa requirements and travel bans, significantly limit the teams’ options and may affect their performance.

Prediction

Spain vs. Switzerland

This week, we will witness action-packed Nations League matches that make your day the best in a hectic work schedule. On November 19, 2024, Spain will compete against Switzerland at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López (Santa Cruz de Tenerife).

Big Chances

  • Spain: Ten total goals scored
  • Switzerland: Four total goals scored

This season, Spain started the campaign with a 0-0 equalizer against Serbia, but further, they found the rhythm of the game, continuing their undefeated record in the Nations League. In the last match, they faced Denmark in round five; Spain won their fourth consecutive match with a score of 1-2. Mikel Oyarzabal’s goals in the first and second halves, goals from Ayoze Perez, and the team’s dominant defense led them to secure the win and put the opponent at bay. Regarding their defense and offense, they maintain their balance, the team’s primary strength that made them stand ahead in the League A Group 4 division with 13 points.

This season was quite challenging for Switzerland, which is still hungry to grab its first victory in the Nations League. From the opening match to the third, they suffered consecutive defeats to Denmark, Spain, and Serbia. They ended up in a draw in their last two games again with Denmark and Serbia. In the previous match with Serbia, they struggled to convert the chances into opportunities, but Zeki Amdouni shot the first goal in the second half. Still, the 88th-minute goal from the opponent wrapped up the game in a draw rather than their first victory of the season. The team needs to focus more on their offense and defense; otherwise, this will worsen their performance. Considering the recent performance and current form, Spain will have a higher chance of winning the game.

Croatia vs. Portugal

On November 19, 2022, football enthusiasts will watch as Croatia takes on Portugal at Stadion Poljud in Split in what promises to be a thrilling UEFA Nations League clash.

Big Chances

  • Croatia: Seven total goals scored
  • Portugal: Twelve total goals scored

Croatia and Portugal are ready for the second H2H season clash after their round-one meetup. On September 5, 2024, in round one, Portugal defeated Croatia with a score of 2-1. The complete action of the game happened in the first half when, in the 7th minute, Diogo Dalot shot the first goal, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo shooting the second goal, which gave the team an early advantage to grab the victory. Before the end of the second half, Diogo Dalot tried to shoot another goal for the team, but unfortunately, it converted into his own goal. Moving over to the second half of the game, both teams were involved in several substitution changes, but nothing improved the game.

At last, the early lead in the first half made Portugal win. Moving over to the statistics, Portugal had a ball possession of 49%, 15 goal attempts, six shots on goal, and three shots off goal, and Croatia had 51% ball possession, 13 goal attempts, four shots on goal, and shots off goal. In League A Group 1, Portugal is standing in first place with a record of four wins and one draw and remains undefeated; behind them, Croatia is standing with two wins, one draw, and two losses. When we look over their H2H record in the UEFA Nations League, Portugal was highly dominant over Croatia; this shows their determination and resilience. Therefore, while comparing both team’s performances, Portugal is standing ahead, and they have an edge to win this game.

Luxembourg vs. Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is making a road trip to Stade de Luxembourg (Luxembourg) to play Luxembourg on November 19, 2024, in the highly anticipated UEFA Nations League.

Big Chances

  • Luxembourg: One total goal scored
  • Northern Ireland: Nine total goals scored

Luxembourg heads into this match with a 0-1 defeat against Bulgaria in round five. In the entire game, Luxembourg showed a lackluster performance that ended the game without scoring a single point. While analyzing their performance so far in the UEFA Nations League, they are struggling harder to secure a victory, especially since their offense and defense were worse, which made their performance lag and turned their opportunity into points. In the match statistics, the expected goal from Luxembourg was 1.04; in addition, they had 64% ball possession and 18 goal attempts. On the other hand, Northern Ireland won their second straight match against Belarus with a dominant score of 2-0.

Following the complete underperformance in the first half of both teams, Daniel Ballard and Dion Charles led the team towards victory in the second half. In the game, Northern Ireland expected a goal of 2.60, and they had ball possession of 58% and ten goal attempts. In the League C Group 3 division, Northern Ireland is standing in first place with three wins, one draw, one loss, and ten points, and Luxembourg is standing bottom in the same division with a record of two draws, three losses, and three points. Despite their weak defense, a significant drawback made them lose all the matches. So, in the upcoming match, they need to be more precise in their attack to move their game level upward. As a result, Northern Ireland will have a higher chance of winning this game.

Hungary vs. Germany

In an electrifying UEFA Nations League clash on November 20, 2024, Hungary will take on Germany at the iconic Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

Big Chances

  • Hungary: Three total goals scored
  • Germany: Seventeen total goals scored

During the previous encounter, Hungary suffered a 4-0 defeat to the Netherlands in the round-five game, which took place on November 17, 2024. On the game day, Hungary’s defense struggled to contain the Dutch attacks, leading to several scoring opportunities for the Netherlands. In addition to this, the match was briefly interrupted in the first half due to a medical emergency involving Hungary’s assistant coach, Adam Szalai, which may have affected the team’s focus and momentum. Hungary is in third place in League A Group 3 with one win, two draws, and two losses. At the same time, Germany continued their undefeated record and won their third straight match against Bosnia & Herzegovina with a dominant score of 7-0.

They started the game strongly with the help of Jamal Musiala by scoring just 78 seconds into the game, and Tim Kleindienst scored his first international goal in the 23rd minute after Robert Andrich’s shot deflected off him. Bosnia & Herzegovina’s defense struggled to contain Germany’s attacks, leading to multiple scoring opportunities. Overall, Germany’s solid offense played and counter-pressed defeated the opponent and made them leave the ground without scoring a single point. Germany is standing at the top in the same division with four wins and one draw. However, based on recent performances, Germany has the upper hand in the match against Hungary.
