RCB Done It Again — Champions of IPL 2026
The 2026 IPL was one thrilling tournament, highlighting the best young cricket talent. It ran from late March to May, with ten teams competing across India. The big finale on May 31 took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru went into the tournament as the defending champs, having won last season. And guess what? They kept that title, finishing right at the top of the league. They pulled off this victory by winning nine out of their fourteen matches.
Gujarat Titans had a tougher path to the finals. They battled in Qualifier 2 to get to the title match. But the best stories weren’t even about the final match itself. It was all about fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a prospect for the Rajasthan Royals. Over the season, he broke records that had stood for more than 10 years, making history in the tournament’s records.
The IPL Final: GT bats first
RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and had no hesitation in bowling first. It turned out to be a great call. RCB’s seamers set the pace immediately with a short-ball plan that kept GT’s batters under pressure throughout the powerplay. The Gujarat Titans struggled and lost both openers early in the innings. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan were both dismissed, leaving the team at just 22 runs before the sixth over ended. Gill managed 10, dismissed by Hazlewood, who took a good catch off his own bowling. Sudharsan fell to a trademark short and wide delivery from Bhuvneshwar Kumar that angled away. This delivery drew a mistimed pull that lobbed to Devdutt Padikkal on the boundary.
Arshad Khan scored a brisk 15 runs off six balls to change the momentum. However, Josh Hazlewood dismissed him, leaving GT in serious trouble at 50 for 3. It was Washington Sundar who steadied the ship for Gujarat. The all-rounder played with maturity, picking his moments carefully, and brought up a composed fifty off 37 balls. His innings held GT together while wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Impact player Prasidh Krishna came in late to give GT’s innings a little push. They finished with a below-par total of 155 for 8. However, this score was enough to keep them in the game if their bowlers fired.

RCB chase it down in style
RCB needed 156 runs to win. Kohli and impact player Venkatesh Iyer opened the innings and attacked from the very first over. Kagiso Rabada, who was in the running for the Purple Cap, was the target. The two RCB openers hit him for 37 runs in his first two overs alone. The Narendra Modi Stadium was rocking. RCB were flying at 70 for 2 by the end of the powerplay. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Iyer for a quickfire 32 runs off 16 balls. Kagiso Rabada sent back Devdutt Padikkal soon after. But Kohli was still there, and that was all RCB needed.
Rajat Patidar joined his captain and the two of them built a composed partnership at the crucial stage of the chase. Rashid Khan and Mohammed Siraj briefly kept Gujarat in the game. They took wickets at regular intervals to make RCB work for every run. Tim David fell to a GT review that was upheld. But nothing could shake Kohli. He played with the calmness of a man who had been here many times before. He accelerated beautifully in the final overs. He finished unbeaten on 75 runs off 42 balls. This knock took RCB past the line in just 18 overs with 12 balls to spare.

The IPL winning moment
On the third ball of the 19th over, Kohli punched the delivery through the covers for a boundary. With that shot, the equation was settled, and RCB secured the victory. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket ground, erupted. Red and gold confetti poured down from the stands. Players sprinted in from every corner of the field. Jitesh Sharma ran the entire length of the pitch and jumped into Kohli’s arms. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was in the twilight years of his career, but played one of his best seasons. Tears rolled down his face during this emotional moment. The entire RCB team formed one massive huddle in the middle of the pitch, jumping and screaming together.
Shubman Gill walked over to congratulate Kohli, a classy moment from a classy captain. The Gujarat Titans were heartbroken, but they knew they had been beaten by a truly great team on the night.
Celebrations on the field
The celebrations were everything you would expect from a team that had just made history. Rajat Patidar ran to the boundary and picked up an RCB flag from a fan. He waved it over his head as the crowd yelled. Virat Kohli went down on one knee and looked up at the sky. He pointed both hands upward in a trademark gesture that felt more emotional than ever. Josh Hazlewood joined the Indian players in a full-team lap of honor around the boundary. The team dug out, flooded with support staff, coaches, and everyone else associated with the franchise. The players drenched each other with water from their bottles as the fireworks lit up the Ahmedabad night sky.
Words from the players and coach
“I told the boys before the game — just play your cricket. Don’t think about history or records. Just enjoy it. And they did exactly that.”— Rajat Patidar, RCB captain.
“This one means everything. We have been through so much together as a franchise. To do it back-to-back, to be only the third team to ever do this… I have no words. This is for every RCB fan who never gave up.”— Virat Kohli, Player of the Match.
“We wanted to show that last year was not a one-off. This team is built to last. I am incredibly proud of every single person in that dressing room.”— Andy Flower, RCB head coach.
“RCB were simply the better team on the night. We will come back stronger. This group has the character to do that”. — Shubman Gill, GT captain.
IPL Trophy celebration
The trophy presentation happened on a stage right in the middle of the Narendra Modi Stadium. BCCI chairman Mithun Manhas presented the IPL 2026 trophy to Rajat Patidar. Patidar proudly raised it overhead to draw the biggest cheer of the evening. Kohli held the trophy after that, and the team posed together for photos. Fireworks then filled the heavens in red and gold.
Fans stuck around long after the ceremony, singing songs about the RCB team. The fans did not want to leave the stadium because they were having an incredible time. Television broadcasts showed supporters celebrating into the early morning hours in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and all over the country.

IPL 2026 – Conclusion
IPL 2026 will be remembered as a season of two stories told side by side. One story focused on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise waiting nearly two decades for its first title. The team then turned around and won the tournament again the very next year. They became only the third team in IPL history to successfully defend their title. This achievement placed them in an elite club alongside Chennai Super Kings (2010–11) and Mumbai Indians (2019–20). At 37, Virat Kohli proved he still has everything it takes to win on the biggest stage. Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar displayed the calm and consistent leadership of a champion captain.
The other story focused on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old talent from Bihar. He walked onto the grand IPL stage and simply refused to be intimidated by any bowler. He scored 776 runs with 72 sixes at an incredible strike rate of 237 while claiming five individual awards. This astonishing single-season performance had never been achieved before in IPL history. Even Sachin Tendulkar said he was “really special.” The future of Indian cricket looks incredibly bright. The historic IPL 2026 season gave fans the clearest sign yet of just how bright that future will be.
