The Russian Premier League’s Format

In the Russian Premier League season, 16 teams take part and compete against each other. At the end of the season, the team with the most points finishes off as the Russian Premier League champion and is awarded a spot in the UEFA Champions’ League Group Stage.

The runners-up of the season are given a place in the Champions League qualifying round. The third and fourth-placed teams are given a place in the Europa League qualifying stages.

The last two teams who finish in the 15th and 16th positions are automatically relegated to the second tier of Russian football, the Football National League. The teams that finish in 13th and 14th place take part in a promotion/relegation playoff against the third and fourth team from the FNL.

The 2018/19 Russian Premier League was the 27th season of the premier football competition in Russia and 16th under the current name of Russian Premier League. The season began at the end of July on 28th 2018 and finished all the 30 matches per team on 26 May 2019.

The club that won the 2018/19 Russian Premier League was Zenit Saint Petersburg. It was their 5th Russian Premier League title and they won it with 8 points ahead of the defending champions Lokomotiv Moscow. Their previous title win was during the 2014/15 season.
