The Winter Olympics 2026 have made a worldwide sensation, with the dual hosts Milan and Cortina getting the spotlight. In fact, Milan and Cortina have the perfect geography for snow sports, making them host again after 70 years. It is also the first time that two cities have co-hosted a Winter Olympic event.

Hosting a Winter Olympic event goes beyond having the right infrastructure. It has a lot to do with the cultural phenomenon of the host cities. It all starts with the first-ever Winter Olympics event in Chamonix, a Splendid inaugural year for the Winter Olympics. Now we have the Milano-Cortina 2026, and it goes up to Utah in 2034.

Chamonix 1924 – The Inaugural Year

Even after a century, the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix remain iconic. Chamonix started off the Winter Olympics for the first time, beginning a new tradition in Olympic history.

It began on 25th January 1924 and left a lasting impact that echoes to this day. It was considered a defining moment for ice sports, as they finally received their long-overdue recognition on the global stage.

Fact: It was originally called the International Winter Sports Week and was also the first official winter games. It was only later that they adopted the term “Winter Olympics,” which the IOC (International Olympic Committee) gave them.

St. Moritz 1948 – Games of Renewal

The fifth Winter Olympics at St. Moritz was a breath of fresh air after the Second World War. Following the 1936 Winter Olympics, the Second World War engulfed Europe, creating a turbulent environment.

This resulted in a 12-year gap where no Olympic Games were held. Two scheduled Winter and Summer Olympic Games were cancelled between 1940 and 1944. After World War II, the IOC decided to resume the Olympic Games, leading to the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz.

Fact: Since it took place after a 12-year gap, the 1948 Winter Olympic event is called “Games of Renewal”. It symbolized the post-war recovery.

Squaw Valley 1960 – Modern Olympics Begin Here

The Squaw Valley Winter Olympics literally redefined the Olympic Games by introducing innovations that set a new standard. It was the first Olympics to modernize everything.

It built the first Winter Olympics village, where athletes shared space with fellow athletes. It built a cultural phenomenon by uniting athletes despite the competition. Indeed, the 1960 Winter Olympics forever changed the games for the better.

Fact: The Squaw Valley Winter Olympics was the first Olympic event to televise the games live and to use instant replay.

Lillehammer Winter Olympics 1994 – Two-Year Shift

The Lillehammer Winter Olympics changed the norm in the Olympic calendar. The 1994 Olympics occurred two years after the 1992 Winter Olympics.

It was also the first Winter Olympics to be held in a different year from the Summer Olympics. Consequently, the IOC decided to follow this format, giving us the Winter Olympics two years after the Summer Olympics.

Fact: The Lillehammer Winter Olympic Event is the pioneer of sustainable games, which promoted five “green goals”.  

Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 – Too Costly to Miss

The Sochi Winter Olympics are known for being the most expensive Winter Olympics. Due to demanding infrastructures and some unpredictability, the initial budget was not enough to cover. 

They decided to spend more than the estimated amount, resulting in a massive expenditure of 51 billion USD.

Fact: The Sochi Winter Olympics budget exceeded about forty times the budget of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 – First to Host Both the Summer and Winter Olympics

Beijing created a unique record by hosting the Winter Olympics in 2022. It remains the first and only city to host both Summer and Winter Olympics.

Fact: The Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 set the record for the most gender-balanced Winter Olympics, with 45% of participants being women.

Future Winter Olympics Locations – Cities That Will Host the Upcoming Winter Olympics

France sweeps the bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics. The famous French Alps region will see the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.

Regions such as Nice, Briançon, Haute-Savoie, and Savoie are reportedly being considered as the possible venues.   After France, the United States gets a chance to host the 2034 Winter Olympics in the state of Utah. The United States has set a solid record for hosting the Winter Olympics the most times.
