NHL 2024-25 Weekly Wrap-Up: Top Performances and Upcoming Game Previews

In the first week of December, the NHL 2024-25 was a rollercoaster of surprises and stellar performances. Unexpected underdog victories and jaw-dropping player performances kept us all on the edge of our seats. Reviewing the standings this week, we see that the top two teams in the Eastern Conference divisions are neck and neck, creating a suspenseful and unpredictable playoff race. Every game now holds the potential to shape the division’s fate. The season’s remaining weeks promise more of this thrilling unpredictability, ensuring we’re all in for a wild ride.

Throughout the week, ice hockey fans were treated to a thrilling display of skill and determination from the league’s top team. In the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Maple Leaf from the Atlantic Division started the week with a triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning by two points. The winning streak increased to three by defeating the Blackhawks and Predators, a testament to their skill and determination. However, the last match with Washington Capitals snapped their three consecutive triumphs with 1-3, but their performance throughout the week was a source of pride for their fans. The Florida Panther’s week journey is also quite impressive, with two wins and one loss; they started this week’s campaign with a dominant triumph against Hurricanes with a score of 6-0, and in the next match, they suffered a defeat with Penguins by a margin of one point, but they bounced back and won their recent match with Flyers with a score of 7-5. Both teams are standing ahead in the Atlantic Division with 34 points, which means the upcoming game will decide who is going top and who will sit in second place.

This week, the Washington Capitals experienced a narrow win with the Devils and a narrow defeat to the Sharks, but their recent form was excellent, with a 3-1 triumph over the Maple Leafs. Despite the Devils standing tie with the Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan Division, they suffered a defeat this week by a margin of one point. Still, they managed to bounce back and win their last two matches, Rangers and Kraken, showing resilience and determination in their recent form. In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Wild performs phenomenally in three games this week. They won all three games by defeating the Predators, Canucks, and Ducks. In the Pacific Division, the Vegas Golden Knights started the week with a nightmare by losing the match to Utah without scoring a single shot; their unbalanced offense and defense gave an excellent opportunity for the opponent to score, and it ended up in 0-6. But they managed to win two more matches with the Oilers and the Ducks. Let’s move on to tomorrow’s match, which will come up and determine who will lead down their points.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets will travel to the United Center (Chicago, IL) on December 8, 2024, to face the Chicago Blackhawks in a National Hockey League match.

Leading Scorers

  • Kyle Connor is the top scorer for the Winnipeg Jets, with a record of 14 goals, 16 assists, and 30 points.
  • Ryan Donato is the Chicago Blackhawks’ dominant scorer, contributing ten goals, five assists, and 15 points.

The Winnipeg Jets head into this match by snapping their four-loss streak by knocking off the Buffalo Sabres in the prior game, showing their fighting spirit and solid attack. Even though in the first period, the Jets couldn’t outscore the opponent, in the subsequent periods, they focused on defense and tied the game at the end. In overtime, Adam Lowry’s shot led the team toward victory.

The Chicago Blackhawks suffered their fourth straight defeat against the Boston Bruins by two points. Despite the strong performances from Alex Vlasic and Jason Dickinson, the Boston Bruins’ overall performance and key players led to their victory, and it is another disappointing loss for the Chicago Blackhawks. Looking at their recent performance and overall record, the Winnipeg Jets have the upper hand to win this game.

New York Islanders vs. Carolina Hurricanes

The Metropolitan divisions, the New York Islanders, and the Carolina Hurricanes are all set for their head-to-head battle on December 8, 2024, at UBS Arena (Elmont, NY).

Leading Scorers

  • Martin Nečas is the Carolina Hurricanes’ key scorer, with 14 goals, 27 assists, and 41 points.
  • Anders Lee is the top offensive threat for the New York Islanders. He has 11 goals, ten assists, and 21 points.

In the Metropolitan division, the New York Islanders are last with a record of nine wins, 11 losses, and seven overtime losses. The Carolina Hurricanes are in third place with 17 wins, eight losses, and one OTL. In their last five H2H matches, the Carolina Hurricanes have been dominant over the New York Islanders, with four victories and one match ending in a draw.

This season, the New York Islanders have a solid goaltending that shuts down the opponent’s offenses. However, they need help with their inconsistent offense, which puts extra pressure on their defense and goaltending. On the other hand, the Carolina Hurricanes have a solid start to the season with their offensive depth, but the primary issue lies in their defense, which strong offensive teams can exploit. Therefore, the Carolina Hurricanes have the edge going into this matchup.

Florida Panthers vs. San Jose Sharks

The Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks are all set for their first meet-up this season on December 8, 2024, at Amerant Bank Arena (Sunrise, FL) in NHL action.

Leading Scorers

  • Tyler Toffoli is the top scorer for the San Jose Sharks with ten goals, eight assists, and 18 points.
  • Sam Reinhart is the Florida Panthers’ leading scorer, with 19 goals, 18 assists, and 37 points.

In their previous encounter, the Florida Panthers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers with a score of 7-5. With Evan Rodrigues’s and Niko Mikkola’s help, the Florida Panthers took the early lead, which was the crucial point for their triumph over the Flyers. In addition, with just 1.59 left in the game, Sam Reinhart scored the go-ahead goal on the power play, and Matthew Tkachuk sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final seconds. Regarding skating, the Panthers are impressive by standing third, with 3.78 goals per game, but their major drawback this season was their goaltending, which placed them in the 26th place with 3.33 goals against per game.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks have concluded their three-winning streak by losing their prior match with the Tampa Bay Lightning by a disappointing score of 1-8. The Sharks struggled defensively throughout the game and couldn’t contain Tampa Bay’s potent offense. Their goaltending also couldn’t stop the onslaught, leading to the high score. In skating, they had 2.79 goals per game, and in goaltending, they marked 3.48 goals against per game. Considering the potent offense, home advantage, and recent form, the Florida Panthers will likely win this game.

Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche

At Little Caesars Arena (Detroit, MI), the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche will square off on December 8, 2024, in the exciting NHL 2024-25 showdown.

Leading Scorers

  • Mikko Rantanen is the top goal scorer for the Colorado Avalanche, marking 15 goals, 20 assists, and 35 points.
  • Dylan Larkin is the Detroit Red Wings’ dominant scorer, with a record of 12 goals, eight assists, and 20 points.

When it comes to a potent offensive squad, the Avalanche trump all with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen as their reliable scorers. Although the Avalanche’s top defense has issues, traveling better than winning on the road gives them a distinct advantage. Meanwhile, the Red Wings will rely on home-ice advantage and make the best of Cam Talbot’s goaltending to keep the game close.

Their offensive inconsistency is going to be tough. Both sides have had their respective highs and lows; this one will be unpredictable. Expect lots of skills and chances. The puck will drop, the Red Wings will try to take advantage of any openings in the Avalanche defense, and they will have a higher chance to crown the triumph.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Washington Capitals

On December 8, 2024, the Montreal Canadiens will lock horns with the Washington Capitals at Bell Centre (Montreal, QC) in the exhilarating NHL fixture 2024-25.

Leading Scorers

  • Alexander Ovechkin is the Washington Capitals’ main goal scorer, with 15 goals, 10 assists, and 25 points.
  • Cole Caufield is the dominant force for the Montreal Canadiens. He has a record of 16 goals, seven assists, and 23 points.

Both teams are coming off a triumph in their last match, in which the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Nashville Predators with an impressive scoreline of 3-0. Thanks to Jake Evans, Patrik Laine, and Joel Armia, who contributed to each goal that led the team toward success. In the Atlantic Division, the Montreal Canadiens stand at the bottom of the table with a record of 10 wins, 13 losses, and three OTLs. Their offense was quite decent, saving them from defeat; the central issue was their goaltending, which caused them to face defeat and pushed them down to their division’s bottom position.

The Washington Capitals defeated the Maple Leaf in the prior match with a score of 3-1 with the help of Nic Dowd, Connor McMichael, and Alexei Protas. The Washington Capitals are ahead in the Metropolitan Division with 18 wins, six losses, and two OTLs. With 38 points on their board, they are tied up with the Devils, so this upcoming game will be crucial for them to secure and stay in their first position. In terms of their skating, they are best in that, with 4.04 goals per game, and at the same time, their defense is also quite impressive, which will help them to move forward in this journey. Therefore, the Washington Capitals will win this game.

Ottawa Senators vs. Nashville Predators

The Ottawa Senators welcome the Nashville Predators for the upcoming NHL 2024-25 battle on December 8, 2024, at Canadian Tire Centre (Ottawa, ON).

Leading Scorers

  • Filip Forsberg is the leading scorer for the Nashville Predators, with a record of 13 goals, eight assists, and 17 points.
  • Brady Tkachuk is the top scorer for the Ottawa Senators and has shot 13 goals, 16 assists, and 29 points.

The Ottawa Senators have offensive depth from players like Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson, who have led the team’s offensive attack. They also boast of sometimes effective power play. The main problems the Senators face in their game are consistency in their defense and goaltending, which often allows too many shots and, thus, goals to be scored on them.

The Predators’  strengths are their goaltending and physical side, which provides extra support and breaks down opponents. However, they need to be stronger in the offense and penalty-killing programs. In that regard, for the Predators’ success, they need to find a solution to create a consistent offense and improve the efficiency of their penalty kill. Given their recent performances, the Ottawa Senators will have an advantage to win this game.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs will face off in an NHL showdown on December 8, 2024, at PPG Paints Arena (Pittsburgh, PA).

Leading Scorers

  • William Nylander is the Toronto Maple Leafs’ foremost goal scorer, with 16 goals, 11 assists, and 27 points.
  • Rickard Rakell is the Pittsburgh Penguins’ top scorer, with a record of ten goals, six assists, and 16 points.

The Penguins have had a solid start to their NHL 2024-25 campaign, led by veterans like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Their resilience, particularly in home games, has kept them competitive. However, the team must address their inconsistency and reduce penalties to climb higher in the standings. Depth scoring beyond their top stars is crucial to alleviate pressure on their key players. These improvements can help the Penguins maintain momentum and enhance their overall performance.

On the other hand, the Toronto Maple Leafs have showcased their offensive prowess this season, with Auston Matthews and John Tavares leading their scoring efforts. Enhancing their defensive play and penalty kill efficiency is essential for the Leafs to succeed. This matchup promises to be a thrilling contest, with both teams needing to address their weaknesses to secure a victory. The Penguins’ home advantage and recent form might give them a slight edge, but the Leafs’ offensive firepower could tip the scales in their favor if they play to their full potential.

Los Angeles Kings vs. Minnesota Wild

To maintain their lead in the division, the Minnesota Wild is traveling away to face off against the Los Angeles Kings on December 8, 2024, at Arena (Los Angeles, CA).

Leading Scorers

  • Kirill Kaprizov is the Minnesota Wild’s top scorer, scoring 17 goals, 25 assists, and 42 points.
  • Adrian Kempe is the leading scorer for the Los Angeles Kings with 12 goals, 12 assists, and 24 points.

The Kings have been performing well thus far. At home, they are a respectable 9-2-1. They won six of ten. Key contributors in their standing are Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. However, they still need some consistency this season. The team has found it challenging to perform outside their arena for a while now. Their last few games have been less than stellar, and they’ll have to be at their best to face the soaring Wild.

On the other hand, the Minnesota Wild has been phenomenal this season, carrying an 18-4-4 overall record and a road record of 11-1-3. Behind dynamic Kirill Kaprizov, who has picked up 38 points, the Wild have been phenomenal. Despite their dependence on key players, they have shown resilience and depth. Their high-scoring offense and solid defense make them the favorites for this game. The Kings’ strong home performance and ability to win close games will be crucial, but the Wild’s overall form and road prowess give them the upper hand in this matchup.

Edmonton Oilers vs. St. Louis Blues

The Edmonton Oilers will face the St. Louis Blues on December 8, 2024, at Rogers Place (Edmonton, AB) in the highly anticipated NHL 2024-25 showdown.

Leading Scorers

  • Jordan Kyrou is the St. Louis Blues’ dominant scorer, with a record of nine goals, 13 assists, and 22 points.
  • Leon Draisaitl is the top scorer for the Edmonton Oilers with 19 goals, 15 assists, and 34 points.

The Oilers are doing well this season; their record stands at 14-10-2. The two biggest stars of the franchise are Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. These two players with an explosive offense can break even the best defense. On top of that, McDavid has been streaking goals for quite some time, and his ability to score has been a significant advantage for the Oilers.

The Blues have also started the season well, with a record of 13-12-2. They have shown resilience and depth, with players like Jordan Kyrou and Pavel Buchnevich stepping up to contribute offensively. The Blues’ defense has been solid, and goaltender Jordan Binnington has been reliable between the pipes. Considering the home-ice advantage, the Edmonton Oilers will win this game.

New York Rangers vs. Seattle Kraken

The New York Rangers’ and Seattle Kraken’s game is scheduled for December 8, 2024, at Madison Square Garden (New York, NY), in an NHL 2024-25 fixture.

Leading Scorers

  • Jared McCann is the Seattle Kraken’s top player. He had ten goals, 13 assists, and 23 points.
  • Artemi Panarin is the New York Rangers’ leading scorer. He had 15 goals, 17 assists, and 32 points.

The Rangers have had a solid start to the season with a record of 14-10-1. They have been strong at home, winning nine of their 12 games at Madison Square Garden. Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider have been key players for them, and they have carried their offense. But lately, the Rangers have been having some trouble, winning only two of their last eight games. They must maintain consistency and learn to play close games to win.

Seattle Kraken has had a more complicated season so far with 13-14-1. They will try to recover from the defeat of the New Jersey Devils and get the away win. Jared McCann, Jaden Schwartz, and Oliver Bjorkstrand are excellent sources of offense. Although they have shown a lot of resilience and depth, the Kraken must tighten up their defense and improve consistency. Since the Rangers are slight favorites because of their recent performances at home, the Kraken’s ability to play on the road makes this a competitive game.
