The NBA Cup 2024, aka Emirates NBA Cup, is the upcoming multi-stage basketball tournament. In the middle of the NBA 2024-25 regular season, the highly anticipated NBA Cup tournament will be played. This NBA Cup 2024 is the second edition tournament founded and played in 2023. As for the overview of this tournament, the NBA Cup holds 30 teams to participate and move forward according to the format of the multi-stage tournament. The previous NBA Cup 2023 was officially announced on July 8, 2023, and debuted on NBA Season 2023-24. Also, the first edition of this event is known as the In-Season Tournament. Similar to the previous season’s NBA Cup tournament, this NBA Cup 2024 has its semifinals, and championship games will be played at T-Mobile Arena. This event excites the fans more to hold great expectations for the team, which steps for the final in the iconic venue.

Even as the new NBA Cup 2024 draws near, fans hold a special place for the first edition tournament, and the memories are filled with thrilling games between favorite teams and players who are giving their best to shine more in the stadium. NBA Cup Format

The format of this tournament is designed to ensure fairness and resembles in-season, multi-stage tournaments seen in European soccer. In the group stage, the Eastern and Western Conferences are split into three groups, each containing five teams, comprising six groups. Matches will occur on Tuesdays and Fridays from November 12, 2024, to December 3, 2024, contributing to the regular season and the NBA Cup standings. Each team will compete against every other team in their group, playing four games—two at home and two away. This arrangement ensures that all teams can utilize home and away advantages equally.

Suppose two or more teams in a group finish with identical records after group play. In that case, the following tiebreakers will be used: –

  • Head-to-head record in the group stage
  • Point differential in the group stage (excluding overtime)
  • The total number of points scored in the group stage (excluding overtime)
  • The regular season record for 2023–24
  • Random drawing

The knockout stage, which is the highlight of the tournament, is where the real excitement begins. The winners of each group move on to this stage, along with the runner-up with the best record in each conference, who advances as a wild card.

This knockout stage is a single-elimination tournament; the quarterfinals, which promise to be thrilling, will take place on December 10 and 11, 2024. In this round, the top teams from group play will host the wild card team, setting the stage for intense matchups. The semifinals are set for December 14, 2024, with the championship game on December 17, 2024, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which is expected to be the most exciting moment of the tournament.

Games Count

Quarterfinal and semifinal games are counted as regular-season games and will impact league standings. The championship game, however, does not count toward the regular season, and its statistics are not included in the season totals.

Additional Games for Quarterfinal Losers:

The four teams eliminated in the quarterfinals will play an extra game against each other within the same conference on December 12, 13, 15, or 16. These additional matchups allow the teams to continue competing and enhance their final tournament standings.

Games for Non-Qualifiers:

The 22 teams that do not advance to the knockout stage will play two more regular-season games to complete their 82-game schedule. This includes one home game and one away game. Of these matchups, 20 will be within the same conference, featuring teams that only faced each other thrice during the regular season. The remaining two games will be interconference matchups involving the lowest-ranking teams in their respective groups.

Predictions

Washington Wizards vs. Boston Celtics

The Washington Wizards clash with the Boston Celtics on November 23, 2024, at Capital One Arena, Washington, United States, in the NBA Cup 2024-25 showdown.

Bad Turn:

  • The Washington Wizards face some challenges with player injuries. Saddiq Bey is currently sidelined with an ACL injury, while Tristan Vukcevic is questionable to play due to a knee injury. Marvin Bagley is list as doubtful due to a knee injury.
  • The Boston Celtics have been performing excellently, but star player Kristaps Porzingis is out due to a foot injury sustained during the 2024 NBA Finals.

Previous Game:

Washington’s struggles continued as they lost their ninth straight game, falling 134-106 to the New York Knicks. The Knicks dominated with 40 points in the first quarter and led 109-75 by the end of the third. Despite these challenges, Carlton Carrington, Jonas Valanciunas, and Corey Kispert each scored 18 points for the Washington Wizards, showing their resilience. They started strong with two wins but have lost several games by a significant margin. The young team needs help to compete in a challenging conference. They are shooting 33.4% from three-point range, ranking 25th in the NBA and 26th in three-point defense. Carrington has been a bright spot for Washington, averaging 10.3 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game.

On the flip side, the Boston Celtics are on a winning streak, defeating the unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers 120-117, making 22 three-pointers. Jayson Tatum led with 33 points and 12 rebounds, Al Horford scored 20, and Derrick White added 19. They hit 14 of 22 three-pointers in the first half and led by five with 5:05 remaining. Cleveland narrowed the gap to two in the fourth quarter, but Boston held on for the win. They made four consecutive threes late in the half, finishing with six total, and took a 65-48 lead at halftime. The Boston Celtics lead the NBA with an average of 50 three-point attempts per game. Tatum scored over 30 points for the ninth time this season and recorded his third consecutive double-double, hitting 44.9 percent on three-pointers in his last five games. With this recent success, the Boston Celtics will undoubtedly secure a victory in their upcoming matches.

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Golden State Warriors

On November 23, 2024, the New Orleans Pelicans conflict with the Golden State Warriors at Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, in the NBA Cup moment of truth.

Bad Turn:

  • Due to injuries, the New Orleans Pelicans are missing CJ McCollum, Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III, and Zion Williamson. Jordan Hawkins and Brandon Ingram are both questionable. Karlo Matkovic and Antonio Reeves are in the G League.
  • The Golden State Warriors are dealing with injuries, with Stephen Curry out due to a left peroneal strain and Andrew Wiggins questionable for a lower back strain. De’Anthony Melton is out with right-side inflammation, and Brandon Podziemski is day-to-day with a nose injury.

Previous Game:

The New Orleans Pelicans have added depth to their roster, providing them more options and flexibility. Williamson is a force in the paint, capable of dominating both ends of the floor. He presents a challenging matchup with his size, athleticism, and scoring ability. The New Orleans Pelicans have a solid defensive core that can disrupt opponents’ offensive rhythm, instilling confidence in their ability to defend. They can struggle from beyond the arc, limiting their offensive firepower. The team can be vulnerable on the defensive glass, allowing opponents to get second-chance opportunities. Ultimately, the team that can execute their game plan and limit turnovers will likely come out on top.

Conversely, the Golden State Warriors are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the NBA, stretching defense and creating open shots. Stephen Curry’s magic ability to score from anywhere on the court makes him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the league. The Golden State Warriors have a versatile defense that can switch and guard multiple positions. The Warriors’ core players are getting older, and their ability to maintain their high level of play is a question mark. They can struggle on the defensive glass, allowing opponents to get second-chance opportunities. The Warriors’ bench can be inconsistent, and injuries to key players could significantly impact their performance. Zion’s dominance will drive the Pelicans, while the Golden State Warriors rely on three-point shooting. Rebounding may be crucial. As we conclude, the Golden State Warriors will track similar ways and same tactics moves to grab a triumph in their forthcoming series.
