Antique of NCAA Division I FBS football

NCAA Division I FBS football has been around since 1869, with the first game between Rutgers and Princeton. During this time, key schools opened standard rules, forming the basis for modernized American football in 1876. In 1906, the NCAA announced a player safety report and became official in 1910. NCAA Division I FBS football managed championships and eligibility rules for college sports. The NCAA community split into three divisions in 1973; Division I split into I-A and I-AA. After that, FBS and FCS were renamed in 1978, and FBS denotes the highest level of college football. The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) tried to search for a national champion using polls and computer rankings from 1998 to 2013. Later, the College Football Playoff (CFP) began, following up the top four teams to face off for the national title in 2014. This changes the major advantage of their fans and makes football, a billion-dollar industry, vivacious to American culture. In NCAA Division I FBS football 2025, two schools, Delaware and Missouri State, will make their debuts in FBS. Both teams are from Division I FCS and are likely to meet Conference USA (CUSA) in July. Additionally, UMass is re-entering the Mid-American Conference (MAC) as a full member that same year. UMass is expanding their partnership outside just football. Rule Changes

Let’s explore the game-changing rule modifications from the NCAA Division I FBS football 2025 season. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Committee sanctioned these alterations on April 17, 2025, and they are poised to revolutionize the game.

  • To reduce fake injuries, if medical staff enter the field to assist an injured player. After the ball is ready for play, that team will lose a timeout. If the team has no timeouts left, they will get a five-yard delay in the game penalty. If this happens after the two-minute warning, the injury is the only reason to stop the clock. A ten-second run-off will occur if the team has no timeouts.
  • In the third overtime period, which is open, teams will only have one timeout to use until the game ends. Past teams received a timeout for each overtime period, maybe two-point attempts beginning with the third overtime.
  • After rapid reviews, referees will only say “Overturned” or “Upheld.” They will no longer use “Confirmed” or “Stands.”
  • On punt formations, no player can be directly before the snapper. Or inside the frame of the snapper for a legal tussle kick formation. If these conditions are not met, five players numbered 50-79 must be on the line of tussle. If the snapper is at the end of the line, he loses scrimmage kick protection. Meanwhile, defense can line up a player over him.
  • If a player on the kick-off returns team signals with a “T” using their arms. The team loses its right to return the kickoff; play will be stopped.
  • The rules about distracting opponents during plays will be strengthened. “Stem” and “Move” will only be followed for defense. The defense cannot use sounds that mimic offensive signals.
  • Players trying to recover a loose ball are now considered “defenseless.”
  • Hitting an offensive player in a passing position is now defined as “Roughing the Passer.”
  • “Brandishing a weapon” had been added to the list of unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • Following the rule change from the 2024 Ohio State-Oregon game. Teams with 12 more players on the field after the two-minute warning will be penalized five yards. The offense could reset the game clock to the start of the play. The penalty will apply if extra players leave the field, affecting the play. But the clock reset is not accessible.
  • The Coach to Player (green dot) communication technology, used in FBS, is now allowed for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Prediction

UFC Knights vs Jacksonville State Gamecocks

The UCF Knights clash with the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on August 28, 2025, at FBC Mortgage Stadium, University, Florida. For week 1 in the NCAA Division I FBS football 2025 showdown.

Standings

  • UFC Knights—15th position in the Big 12 conference.
  • Jacksonville State Gamecocks—1stposition in the Conference USA.

Previous Rivalry

The UFC Knights may be about transfers in too many key spots, but they are better. Their secondary is full of playmakers everywhere, and the pass rush will bother the opposition. The Knights have shown significant improvement in their defensive strategies, which could give them an edge.

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks are playing vigorously on the away side with Rich Rodriguez running the game. They are looking to add more huge things through the air. Gavitt Wimsatt played for Kentucky and Rutgers before coming to this team. Well, he can run for scores. Hence, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks will have more of a chance to take a win.

Army Black Knights vs Tarleton State Texans

The Tarleton State Texans and the Army Black Knights get together at Michie Stadium, West Point, New York. They meet on August 29, 2025, for week 1 of the 2025 NCAA Division I FBS football season.

Standings

  • Army Black Knights—1st position in the AAC conference.
  • Tarleton State Texans—10th position in the United Athletic Conference.

Previous Rivalry

The Black Knights started with excellent form and won the AAC Championship in their first season. The Army’s defense was pivotal in their winning streak, leading the AAC in scoring defense. The cornerback position is a significant concern, with a team needing to replace a product from the past season.

Texans have comeback All-Conference quarterback Victor Gabalis and 11 of their top 12 defensive players in 2024. They were a consistently ranked FCS team in 2024, appearing in the FCS top 25 and the performance FCS poll. While this team was strong, the Army can be challenging. According to their performances, the Army Black Knights will have a home-turf advantage to secure a victory.

Maryland Terrapins vs Florida Atlantic Owls

On August 30, 2025, the Maryland Terrapins come to blows with the Atlantic Owls at Byrd Stadium, College Park, Maryland. For week 1 in the NCAA Division I FBS football 2025 run-in.

Standings

  • Maryland Terrapins—17th position in the B1G conference.
  • Florida Atlantic Owls—13th position in the AAC conference.

Previous Rivalry

The Maryland Terrapins are returning after winning just one Big Ten conference game and a three-year bowl streak that is giving way. They lost plenty of their talented wide receivers, and looking to Oklahoma WR Jalil Farooq is a cavernous risk.

FL Atlantic 3-9 maintained just one win in American conference play and averaged a shade below 26 points. They received 5000 total yards in the past year and surrendered 30.3 points. Thus, the Maryland Terrapins will, without doubt, slightly make an edge.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs Texas Longhorns

The Ohio State Buckeyes tussle with the Texas Longhorns on August 30, 2025, at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. These two teams are entering week 1 in the NCAA Division I FBS football 2025 season.

Standings

  • Ohio State Buckeyes—4th position in the B1G conference.
  • Texas Longhorns—1st position in the SEC conference.

Previous Rivalry

The Ohio State National Champion lost 14 players to the NFL and must replace coordinators. On average, the third-ranked Buckeyes scored 35.7 points, and Brian Hartline was promoted from within to call plays.

Conversely, the Texas Longhorns consist of Manning’s running ability in a more RPO-based attack with Quintrevion Winser (1,064 yds). This team lost a lot of receiving talent, and freshman WR Kaliq Lockett can be a difference-maker from day one. As a result, the Texas Longhorns will use the same tactics and moves to gain success in the upcoming matches.

UMass Minutemen vs Temple Owls

For week 1 of the 2025 NCAA Division I FBS football season, the UMass Minutemen and Temple Owls will meet on August 30, 2025, at McGurik Alumni Stadium in Hadley.

Standings

  • UMass Minuteman—3rd position in the Independents conference.
  • Temple Owls—11th position in the AAC conference.

Previous Rivalry

In the 2024 season, UMass displayed a run game, with an average of 200 rushing yards over Tulane in the first game. This team has a moderate passing offense with early-stage struggles in past seasons.

Temple has defensive depth through the transfer portal, and seven defensive transfers will start in the opening game. Leading returner Smith scored 325 yards in 2023, and Antwain Littleton (Maryland) was the most offensive in 2024. UMass will pick up on a triumph in their forthcoming series this time.

Oregon Ducks vs Montana State Bobcats

The Oregon Ducks will face the Montana State Bobcats on August 30, 2025, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. These two teams are in week 1 of the 2025 NCAA Division I FBS football season.

Standings

  • Oregon Ducks—1st position in the B1G conference.
  • Montana State Bobcats—8th position in the Big Sky conference.

Previous Rivalry

The Oregon Ducks had completed with a 13-1 record in the 2024 season. They won the Big Ten Conference in their first year as a league member. This team has concluded the season with a dominant 45-6 win over Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl. With a notable record made, the 39-point triumph was the most significant margin of victory in the Fiesta Bowl’s history.

The Montana State Bobcats completed the 2024 season with a stunning 15-1 record. They were unbeaten in the Big Sky Conference with an 8-0 record. This team has advanced to the FCS National Championship game; they lost to North Dakota State 15-1. Their defensive side was tough, with Brody Grebe securing the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. Montana State has had a rushing offense of 4719 yards and a total offense of 7661 yards. As we conclude, the Oregon Ducks will earn their anticipated matches.
