Early Life and Amateur Career
Mikaela Joslin Mayer was born on July 4, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. She became interested in boxing as a teenager after discovering Muay Thai. Mayer also played bass in an all-female heavy-metal band during her teenage years. She developed into one of America’s leading amateur boxers and became a member of Team USA. Mayer won the 2011 National Golden Gloves title and USA Boxing national championships in 2012, 2014, and 2015. She won gold at the 2012 AMBC Continental Championships and bronze at the 2012 World Championships. Mayer won the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and Americas qualifier before representing America at the Rio Olympics. She reached the quarter-finals but lost to Anastasia Belyakova.
Professional Career
Mayer turned professional in August 2017 and won her debut by first-round knockout. Her major breakthrough took place in 2020, when she defeated Ewa Brodnicka for the WBO super-featherweight title. In 2021, she defeated Maïva Hamadouche to unify the WBO and IBF titles and win the inaugural Ring championship. Mayer lost a split decision to Alycia Baumgardner in their 2022 unification fight. She later changed her division to lightweight and welterweight, winning the WBC interim lightweight title before challenging Natasha Jonas. After losing that fight, Mayer defeated Sandy Ryan twice, winning and retaining the WBO welterweight title. In October 2025, she defeated Mary Spencer to win the WBA, WBC, and WBO super-welterweight titles. She entered the Cameron fight as a three-weight world champion.
Chantelle Cameron
Early Life and Amateur Career
Chantelle Cameron was born on 14 May 1991 in Northampton, England. She started kickboxing when she was 10 years old but soon switched to Muay Thai when she turned 16. Influenced by combat movies and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she took up boxing when she was 18 years old. Chantelle had an undefeated career in amateur combat sports before focusing exclusively on boxing. She won a silver medal in the 2010 EU Championships and a bronze medal in the 2011 EU Championships. She also participated in the 2010 World Championships. Then she was selected to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics by representing the UK.
Professional Career
She became a professional boxer in 2017 and quickly grabbed the IBO lightweight crown. She jumped up into the super-lightweight category and captured the WBC world championship in 2020. She beat Mary McGee in October 2021 to win the IBF and Ring crowns. She reached her pinnacle of success when she defeated Jessica McCaskill in November 2022 to become Britain’s first undisputed champion.
Cameron lost to Katie Taylor by unanimous decision in May 2023, which was her first professional loss in her career. Taylor had requested a rematch, and she defeated Cameron. This was her lone professional loss in her boxing career. Cameron bounced back to clinch the WBC interim super-lightweight belt in 2024. She defeated Michaela Kotaskova in April 2026 to win the vacant WBO super-welterweight belt. She went into the Mayer fight as a two-weight world champion and one of Britain’s best female boxers.
