Spanish La Liga – Format
Rankings
Every season, the La Liga follows a points-based ranking system that awards the team with the most points. The Championship title goes to the team with the most points by the end of the season. Every club plays against every other team in the club. To ensure fairness, each club plays two games, once at home and once on the road, against each team. Explore Bettingpremier’s sports insights.
Top 6 Spots and European Contest Qualifications
Teams that finish in the top four positions in the standings qualify for the UCL Group Stage. They get a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage.
The team with the fifth-highest points in the table gets to play in the Europa League Group Stage. Currently, Espanyol is at the prospect, let’s see what happens as the games pass by.
Similarly, the sixth position in the league standings earns a Conference League Group Stage qualification.
This European qualification narrative further increases the competition to secure the top six positions besides the championship glory.
Relegation and Promotion
In the standings, the most avoided yet inevitable factor is relegation. The bottom three positions are relegated every season. Meanwhile, the top three from the Segunda Division are promoted to La Liga.
There have been teams relegated who waited so long and came back. There are also some teams that got promoted and stayed in La Liga for a long time.
The race to avoid the relegation zone is even stronger than the pursuit for the top 6 positions. Currently, Elche has been promoted from Segunda División and has held very strongly in La Liga, in 8th position.
Current La Liga Season – A Preview
Newly Promoted Teams
Levante, Real Oviedo, and Elche are the promoted teams in the current season. These three teams topped the Segunda Division last year and earned the La Liga position. Especially, Elche is strong with an 8th position in the league, free from the risk of relegation.
Teams at Relegation Risk
Levante and Real Oviedo are at risk of relegation currently. They are promoted to La Liga this year, but they failed to latch onto the opportunity.
Players and Their Stats
Currently, Kylian Mbappé leads the league’s scorer standings. He has bagged around 19 goals out of 19 games he played. It is almost a goal per game, and he is about to become the next Cristiano Ronaldo in La Liga. Next to Mbappé, Vedat Muriqi comes second with 14 goals in the same span. He is the only pillar of the team who scored 14 goals out of 24 total team goals. Despite his performance, Mallorca still ranks 15th in the league. Ferran Torres ranks third in the top scorers with 11 goals out of 19 matches played.
Moreover, players like Lamine Yamal, Vinícius Júnior, and Marcus Rashford top in assists given. Based on the stats, Barcelona seems to have a strong squad with depth. Even though Real Madrid is stacked with players like Vinícius, Mbappé, and Bellingham, Barcelona has stable guidance.

Expected Top 5 Finishes
1. Barcelona
Barcelona is the previous season’s winner, and they seem to perform steadily in the current season, too. Additionally, they have also won the Spanish Super Copa recently, beating Real Madrid. They are just one point away in the table, leading in 1st spot. With a strong squad, we can expect them to lift the trophy once again.
2. Real Madrid
Real Madrid is the second-best prospect in the current season. They have a strong squad just like Barcelona, but under Xabi Alonso’s guidance, the team has some internal turmoil. So, a second-place finish is likely for them.
3. Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid is doing well in the current season, sharing points with Villarreal. But their previous season’s performance was miles better than Villarreal’s. So, Atletico Madrid is expected to finish fourth this season.
4. Villarreal
Villarreal finished 5th in the previous season. This time, the chances are even more solid for Villarreal to win, given Athletic Club’s decline.
5. Real Betis
Apart from the above four clubs, Real Betis seems to perform really well in the current season. Their previous season run was solid, earning them the 6th position. They are expected to qualify for the Conference League Groups Stage once again.
