Every Olympic Event – Explained

Alpine skiing

Alpine skiing is a primary sport and a staple of the Winter Olympic Games. Since 1936, Alpine skiing has been part of every Winter Olympics.

Biathlon

Biathlon is a cross-country skiing event with a stop in between laps. The stop consists of a 50-meter shooting range with five targets. The Biathlete has to shoot the five targets, and missing a target will result in a time penalty.

Bobsleigh

Bobsleigh involves 2 or more athletes using the sled to run down the narrow ice slopes. It has four sled types, varying in the number of athletes on a single sled. They are one with a single woman athlete, two women athletes, two men athletes, and four men athletes. The fastest sled to reach the finish line wins.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing is a classic Winter Olympic sport. Skiers slide through the snow-covered tracks by propelling themselves. It is a timed event similar to Bobsleigh, where the first one to finish wins.

Curling

Curling is a unique ice sport that has players slide a 20 kg granite stone on ice towards a target. It has four players who guide the stone across the ice floor, using friction and momentum. The team that lands the stone on target receives points according to its accuracy.

Figure skating

Figure skating is a flamboyant sport where either an individual or a pair of athletes performs choreographed moves on ice. The points are given based on their choreography, skating, and composition.

Freestyle skiing

Freestyle skiing is a skiing sport where the skiers include acrobatics such as flips, jumps, and aerials. Points are awarded for their difficulty levels in the acrobatics.

Ice hockey

Skeleton

Skeleton is an ice-sliding sport in which participants ride a sled. They launch the sled using a 30-metre sprint down the run. The fastest to finish wins. It has men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions.

Ski jumping

The ski jumping event features competitors sliding down with skis and launching into the air using a ramp to land. They perform various aerial styles such as Lay, Tuck, and Pike in the air. The farthest distance and the most difficult style receive the highest points.

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is similar to ski jumping, except that they use a snowboard instead of skis. The surfer launches into the air and does aerial styles like spins and flips. The points are given on the basis of difficulty, execution, height, and landing.

Speed skating

Speed skating is an ice-skating event where skaters race a specific distance, usually on a 400-metre track. Conventionally, these tracks are oval and have a distance ranging from 500 to 10,000 meters.

Ski Mountaineering – A New Addition in the 2026 Winter Olympics
